چکیده

Let P be a set of n points embedded in the plane, and let C be the complete Euclidean graph whose point-set is P. Each edge in C between two points p, q is realized as the line segment [pq], and is assigned a weight equal to the Euclidean distance |pq|. In this paper, we show how to construct inO(n lgn) time a plane spanner of C of maximum degree at most 4 and of stretch factor at most 20. This improves a long sequence of results on the construction of bounded degree plane spanners of C. Our result matches the smallest known upper bound of 4 by Bonichon et al. on the maximum degree while significantly improving their stretch factor upper bound from 156.82 to 20. The construction of our spanner is based on Delaunay triangulations defined with respect to the equilateral-triangle distance, and uses a different approach than that used by Bonichon et al. Our approach leads to a simple and intuitive construction of a well-structured spanner, and reveals useful structural properties of the Delaunay triangulations defined with respect to the equilateral-triangle distance. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems, I.3.5 Computational Geometry and Object Modeling

New Doubling Spanners: Better and Simpler

In a seminal STOC’95 paper, Arya et al. conjectured that spanners for low-dimensional Euclidean spaces with constant maximum degree, hop-diameter O(logn) and lightness O(logn) (i.e., weight O(logn)· w(MST)) can be constructed in O(n logn) time. This conjecture, which became a central open question in this area, was resolved in the affirmative by Elkin and Solomon in STOC’13 (even for doubling m...

On Spanners and Lightweight Spanners of Geometric Graphs

We consider the problem of computing spanners of Euclidean and unit disk graphs embedded in the two-dimensional Euclidean plane. We are particularly interested in spanners that possess useful properties such as planarity, bounded degree, and/or light weight. Such spanners have been extensively studied in the area of computational geometry and have been used as the building block for constructin...

Towards Plane Spanners of Degree 3

Let S be a finite set of points in the plane that are in convex position. We present an algorithm that constructs a plane 3+4π 3 -spanner of S whose vertex degree is at most 3. Let Λ be the vertex set of a finite non-uniform rectangular lattice in the plane. We present an algorithm that constructs a plane 3 √ 2-spanner for Λ whose vertex degree is at most 3. For points that are in the plane and...

Lower Bounds on the Dilation of Plane Spanners

I) We exhibit a set of 23 points in the plane that has dilation at least 1.4308, improving the previous best lower bound of 1.4161 for the worst-case dilation of plane spanners. (II) For every n ≥ 13, there exists an n-element point set S such that the degree 3 dilation of S equals 1 + √ 3 = 2.7321 . . . in the domain of plane geometric spanners. In the same domain, we show that for every n ≥ 6...

Plane Spanners of Maximum Degree Six

We consider the question: “What is the smallest degree that can be achieved for a plane spanner of a Euclidean graph E?” The best known bound on the degree is 14. We show that E always contains a plane spanner of maximum degree 6 and stretch factor 6. This spanner can be constructed efficiently in linear time given the Triangular Distance Delaunay triangulation introduced by Chew.
